If you have built up a few years no claim bonus you can choose to protect it so that you can preserve the discount should you be unlucky enough to have an accident or claim.

Every year of no claims you have entitles you to a discount on your car insurance and after 4 years this can be up to as much as 60%. However, having just one at fault accident claim or indeed a theft or fire claim can reduce your no claims bonus.  Indeed, the usual step back is 2 years and as such it will take you two years to get back into a position where you could again protect your no claims bonus.

Protecting your no claims guards your discount if you have to make a claim. However, the number of claims you can make vary for each Insurer, some allow 2 claims within a 3 year period most allow 2 claims within a 5 year period without any loss of your no claims bonus.
